The real Toyota Celica LB Turbo Group 5 with start number #60 is one of the most fascinating 'what if' stories from motorsport history. In an era completely dominated by Porsche, Toyota tried to make a fist in the top class of the brutal German racing championship in the late 70s.
A Remarkable Marriage: Toyota and Schnitzer
In 1977, Toyota Deutschland wanted to stimulate the sale of the Celica Liftback (the street car) by participating in the DRM (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft) in Division 1. To build a real racer according to the extreme Group 5 ("Silhouette") regulations, they hired the legendary German team Schnitzer Motorsport.
This was a bizarre move: Schnitzer was (and is) known to be the ultimate BMW tuner. They were commissioned to build the very first factory Toyota for the European circuit.
The Technique: A 560 hp Monster
Under the hugely widened body of kevlar and fiberglass, only the roof, doors and hood remained from the original Celica street car.
The Engine: Schnitzer took a Toyota 18R-G 4-cylinder engine, equipping this with a special 16-valve cylinder head and a giant KKK turbocharger.
Power: This yielded a terrifying 560 horsepower at 8,800 rpm.
Weight: The car weighed only 860 kg thanks to the composite materials.
The Silhouette: The car was no less than 20 cm lower than a standard car and had an extremely aerodynamic, flat nose and a huge rear wing.
The Season of #60 (1977)
The blue car with starting number #60 (and later #56) was sponsored by Optical Work G. Rodenstock (a well-known German manufacturer of lenses) and was driven by Austrian Formula 1 driver Harald Ertl.
Because Schnitzer had to develop the engine and car in just four months — which Porsche had taken years to complete — the car was plagued by extreme reliability problems. The debut in July 1977 at the Hockenheimring was a drama: the car was 25 seconds per lap slower than the Porsches and fell out after 4 laps.
The bright spots:
During the season finale at the Nürburgring in 1977, Ertl finally managed to pull the car over the line in one piece and finished 4th behind three Porsche 935's.
Shortly after, the Celica took his only official victory during the non-championship round ADAC Trophy on the circuit of Zolder
