The Scalextric Mirage GR8 #11 Gulf (article number C4443) is a popular 1:32 scale slotcar that mimics the historic winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1975. Driven by race legends Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, this car drove into the iconic blue-orange Gulf Oil colors to victory at the time.

Features

Drive: Sidewinder engine layout (transversely placed) with rear-wheel drive.
Motor: Scalextric Short Can.
Gear ratio: 11/36.
Lighting: Equipped with working headlights and taillights.
Digitally prepared: DPR (Digital Plug Ready), which means that the car can easily be made digitally with a separate chip.

The model has been released as a detailed Special Edition and is highly sought after by both collectors and active slotcar racers.

The Real Car
The real Mirage GR8 was powered by a Ford Cosworth V8 engine. The victory in 1975 marked the third and last time a car in the legendary Gulf colours took the overall victory over Le Mans. The real 1975 Gulf-Mirage GR8 is a legendary sport-prototype racing car. The car was specifically developed and optimized for one main goal: winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Features

Chassis: An extremely rigid, riveted and glued aluminum monocoque with steel bulkheads. The body was made of lightweight fiberglass and designed by Len Bailey. Compared to its predecessor (the GR7), the GR8 had no less than 21% less air resistance.

Engine: A 3.0-liter Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine. This was a Formula 1 engine in the base. For the 24-hour race, the engine was tuned back to about 380 to 400 hp to improve reliability and fuel economy.

Bearing part: Both the engine and the manual Hewland five-speed gearbox functioned as load-bearing parts of the chassis (stressed members).

Weight: The car weighed empty only 756 kg.

The legendary Le Mans weekend of 1975
The team of John Wyer (Gulf Research Racing Company) built only two copies of the GR8 (chassis 801 and chassis 802) at the time. Both cars were deployed during Le Mans in 1975:

Chassis GR8/801 (The winner - car #11): Driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell. Despite severe vibrations from the V8 engine that caused the engine mounts to tear at the end of the race, the car managed to reach the finish. They completed 336 laps and won the race with one lap lead over a Ligier JS2.

Chassis GR8/802 (Number 3 - car #10): Driven by Vern Schuppan and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud. This car made the success complete by finishing third.

The End of an Era
The victory in 1975 was historic because main sponsor Gulf Oil decided to withdraw from endurance racing immediately after the race. With that, the Mirage GR8 was the very last car to take the overall victory over Le Mans in the classic, independent Gulf period.

Both original chassis still exist and are worth millions of euros in the classic car world today
